Let Me Chip Through the Ice So I Can Dig...? PDF Print E-mail

I was reading an article from the AP regarding the unemployment numbers in the US and they emphasized the 'struggling' road construction laborers as their unemployment numbers are a staggering 18.2 percent.  Um, yeah, it's winter.  It cracks me up how quick people are to panic without thinking for a moment.  For those of you who don't know, in states that have winters below freezing, construction comes to a halt for a few months each year.  It's an ongoing joke here in Chicago that there are only 2 seasons... winter and construction.  During those months, workers are laid off and collect unemployment until the season starts up again in March or April.  Thank you AP for trying to stir up panic and emotion using non-applicable numbers and not providing an explanation.

Leave the Kid Alone!! PDF Print E-mail

US Olympic gold medalist swimmer Michael Phelps was recently photographed smoking from a bong at a local party.  The backlash has been incredible.  Not only has the media completely blanketed the television and airwaves with the story, but Phelps sponsors have began to pull their sponsorship contracts with Phelps which could mean losses in the millions for him.

As if that weren't enough, the South Carolina State's Attorney is trying to build a criminal case against Phelps to apparently make an example of him.  The kid smoked some pot!!  Big deal!!  I know it's illegal, and I know the 'everyone is doing it' argument isn't really valid, but EVERYONE IS DOING IT!  Personally, it's been a very long time, but I know plenty of people who partake on a regular basis.  In my non-formal, non-backed up estimate, I would say that 15-20 percent of the population smokes at the very least, recreationally.

This kid was an American hero less than a year ago and now we're going to crucify him?  This is obviously a political move by the South Carolina attorney's office.  Several people who attended the same party have now been arrested and charged according to Attorney Joseph McCulloch, who is defending one of said people. This is absolutely ridiculous!

Is smoking marajuana wrong?  That's open to debate, but in the legal sense, yes.
Should people who break the law be punished?  Of course
Should Phelps be punished?  Don't you think he's been punished enough already, seriously, this is a misdimeanor offense that occurs daily in every court in the country and there is very little consequence.  This guy has lost his hero status not to mention millions of dollars.  Enough is enough already.

Hate the Cheap Gas Prices? You're in LUCK! PDF Print E-mail

If you're sick of the relief we've felt over the last couple months after record breaking gas prices, don't worry, it looks like the government is going to step in.  Politicians are proposing a 'temporary' gas tax since we as americans are used to paying higher prices for gas anyway.  Temporary?  When has a tax ever been temporary?  We already pay over 18 cents a gallon in federal gas tax, how much more do they want?  The funny part is that some of them want to use the money from the tax to fund another stimulus package.  Call me crazy, but isn't cheaper gas promoting spending elsewhere anyway?  Why do those of us who have to drive to work every day pay money to those who use public transit or the very politicians that are trying to impose a new tax.  How dare they decide how much we can afford to spend on gas!  Supporters also argue that lower gas prices slow efforts to find alternative energy.  Who are these people writing this stuff?  People's fundimental thinking has changed regarding energy.  People aren't going to go run out and buy an SUV because gas prices are low right now.  We've all seen what can happen to gas prices and we have adjusted our lifestyles accordingly.   The public is not going to lose interest in hybrid and alternative energy vehicles because of a temporary reprieve in prices, we know it's only temporary!!  Let us enjoy it for a while!
